Last Days to Buy Forever Stamp at 42 Cents

May 10 will be the last day postal customers can purchase the Forever Stamp for 42 cents. First-class postage increases 4.76% (two cents) to 44 cents beginning on May 11. However, the Forever Stamp can be used to mail a one-ounce letter regardless of the current price of a First-class mail stamp, and regardless of the original price paid for the Forever Stamp.

Additionally, on May 11, the Postal Service is introducing Forever Stamp envelopes, and customers looking to get ahead of the price changes can order these personalized envelopes at 1-800-STAMP-24.

Forever Stamps are available to order online at usps.com, by phone at 1-800-STAMP-24, or at hundreds of grocery stores, pharmacies, convenient stores, and bank locations that sell postage at face value. You may even order your stamps at the link found below:

Stamp Prices to Rise to 44 Cents in May

WASHINGTON – The post office will get an extra 2-cents worth when you mail a letter starting in May.

The U.S. Postal Service announced Tuesday that the price of a first-class stamp will rise to 44 cents on May 11.

That gives plenty of time to stock up on Forever Stamps, which will continue to sell at the current 42-cent rate until the increase occurs. They will remain valid in the future regardless of rate hikes.

“The Postal Service is not immune to rising costs which are affecting homes and businesses across America today,” said Postmaster General John Potter. “Even with the increases, the Postal Service continues to offer some of the lowest postage prices in the world.”

Postage rates go up annually in May, with the new prices announced in February. The overall change is tied to the rate of inflation in the year before.

While the new 44-cent rate covers the first ounce of first-class mail, the price for each additional ounce will remain unchanged at 17-cents.

The Forever Stamp first went on sale in April 2007. Since then, more than 6 billion Forever Stamps have been sold.
As the name suggests, Forever Stamps can be used to mail a one-ounce letter regardless of when the stamps are purchased or used and no matter how prices may change in the future.
Forever Stamps are always sold at the same price as a regular First-Class Mail stamp. Forever Stamps are currently being sold for 41 cents and will be sold for 42 cents starting May 12, 2008.
The Postal Service developed the Forever Stamp for consumers to ease the transition during price changes. There is only one Forever Stamp — it features an image of the Liberty Bell.
Forever Stamps are available for purchase at post offices nationwide, online at usps.com, by phone at 1-800-STAMP-24, and from Automated Postal Centers and ATMs. They are sold in booklets of 20 and sheetlets of 18.
Customers can use Forever Stamps for international mail, but since all international prices are higher than domestic prices, customers will need to attach additional postage. The value of the Forever Stamp is the domestic First-Class Mail letter price in effect on the day of use.

Purple Heart Forever?

As we reported a year ago, efforts have been renewed by several U.S. Senators, who today called on the United States Postal Service to issue the Purple Heart stamp on a permanent basis as a Forever Stamp.

“In a letter to Postmaster General John E. Potter, the Senators praised the reissuance of the Purple Heart stamp at the new 42-cent First Class rate but urged that the stamp be made permanent to honor service members and veterans who have been awarded the Purple Heart.”

The USPS Forever Stamp Booklet, converted by Avery Dennison Security Printing Division, won Best of Show honors in February at the 2008 Print Quality Awards held by the Packaging and Label Gravure Association at its 11th Annual conference.

“This was an extremely difficult job to print, not only was it necessary to keep each side in register but also front-to-back,” says judge Tony White of Flexo/Gravure magazine. “There is not much more that can be said of perfection.”

Postal Rates Change Monday

With less than a week before the 1-cent price hike in stamps starting on May 12, 2008, the U.S. Postal Service is reporting brisk sales of the Forever Stamp, with sales topping 60 million stamps a day. A First-Class Mail stamp will cost 42-cents starting Monday, but customers can continue to use the Forever Stamps that they purchased prior to May 12 at 41-cents, even after the price change.

WASHINGTON (AP) — With a postal rate increase just two weeks away, Americans are buying 30 million Forever stamps a day.

The cost of sending a first-class letter will rise a penny to 42 cents on May 12, but the Forever stamps — currently selling for 41 cents — will remain valid for full postage after the increase.
