Reminder: Postal Rates Changed May 14, 2007

The price for a first-class stamp is now 41 cents. Be forewarned when using an old 39 cent stamp, there is a good chance this letter will be returned or delayed for insufficient postage. Did you try and sneak one of these in the mailbox last Sunday? Your letter will probably be delivered, but perhaps with a postage due notice.

The good news is we will see a reduction in the price for heavier mail, such as oversized greeting cards. Each additional first-class ounce will now cost 17 cents, down from 24 cents. A two-ounce letter will now cost 58 cents to mail, down from the old 63 cent price.

To avoid purchasing outdated postage in the future, consider purchasing a Forever Stamp. Forever Stamps are selling at the new 41 cent price, but they will remain valid for sending a letter regardless of future postal increases.

Forever Stamps are available online, at your local post office, convenience stores, automated postal kiosks and at select ATMs.

  • There are a lot of new rules on what exactly qualifies as “First-Class letter” - none of them giving the assurance that the rules themselves will last forever… I wouldn’t go out and start hoarding these, yet. I have the fine print on my forever stamp post.

There’s actually a really interesting thread on an eBay forum where the price of a 1 oz. letter which is too thick will be more expensive (.80) domestically than mailing it to Canada!

  • Tim,
Thanks for your post. Larger envelopes (more than one-quarter inch thick) and other dimensional restrictions you mention will cost 80 cents for the first ounce and 17 cents for each additional ounce. It doesn’t surprise me that it costs more to mail an irregularly sized domestic letter than a standard letter mailed to Canada. The USPS is not very good in dealing with square pegs in its round hole system, so it assigns these “nonmachinable costs” to the public. The goods news though, a two-ounce conforming letter will cost less to deliver.
