First Day Covers

First day covers, also known as philatelic covers, cachets and FDC’s for short, are collectible envelopes featuring postage stamps cancelled on the same day the stamps were issued. The envelopes are usually decorative and can even be adorned with hand-painted artwork. The USPS usually extends the date to request first day covers, sometimes even by several months. Customers had 60 days from the April 12, 2007 issuance to request first day covers of the new Forever Stamp from the Philadelphia Postmaster.
First day covers are very collectible and there is a strong aftermarket for their sale and trade. There is even a 3,000 member strong following, the American First Day Cover Society, dedicated to the collecting and advancement of first day covers. Several interesting Forever Stamp cachets have surfaced in the months following the stamp’s release.
